Although E-mail correspondence is not yet as effective as traditional means, its powerful potential was demonstrated earlier this year. On March 23, federal bank regulators killed a proposal to track individuals' bank transactions because of the sheer volume of E-mails they received in protest (about 205,000). In this case, E-mail held enough weight to lead the sponsors–the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and three other federal banking agencies–to rethink their plans. The FDIC's chairwoman, Donna Tanoue, said that most of the E-mails were personalized and not generated from lists.
